Lake of the Ozarks  Swinging Bridges of Brumley
swinging bridges Within the Lake of the Ozarks State Park, and managed by the State Park's system, are the Swinging Bridges of Brumley. Located on Highway 42, about 11 miles off of Highway 54, outside of Osage Beach, these bridges were built by Union Electric when the Lake of the Ozarks covered existing low water bridges in the area when the dam was built.

swinging bridges The upright piers were built first, being pulled into position by mules. Cable was then pulled across by hand using some type of pulley or wheel, according to Ralph Long, who helped build the Swinging Bridges back in 1931. Back then, folks like Long made .20 cents an hour. He was laid off before the bridges were completed. Long was single at the time and married men, especially those with families, were given job preference during the depression times. The Swinging Bridges took three months to complete. Although the smaller bridge has undergone some restoration, both bridges are still usuable to the public.

swinging bridges You will want to take a day trip out to the Swinging Bridges. The beauty of the area in its natural setting is very peaceful and quaint. The bridges span a small river that feeds into Lake of the Ozarks. Fishing and frogging are very good, especially after rains. You can enjoy picnicing at the rivers edge and the water temps are usually high since the river is rather shallow. Fires are allowed in the designated areas and overnight tents are allowed. Simply fill out the cards and deposit your $3 fee in the box ... use the honor system. Restrooms are provided.
